Why Grayton Beach

Every 30A town has a personality, and Grayton is the one that never got polished. It is the oldest beach community on this stretch of coast, all sandy streets and live oaks, with a local motto of "Nice Dogs, Strange People" on bumper stickers everywhere.

For a bachelorette group, that means Grayton is the fun day. Seaside and Rosemary are for the photos. Grayton is for the afternoon that accidentally becomes the whole night.

Getting Oriented

Grayton sits roughly mid-30A, just west of Watercolor and about 25 minutes from Destin. The whole walkable core is a few blocks between Hotz Avenue and the beach. If your house is elsewhere on 30A, ride the free Chiringo shuttle from the Grayton Central lot at CR-283 and 30A, which runs daily. Parking in Grayton proper is scarce, so plan around that.

Eat

The Red Bar is the icon, open since 1995 and still the most famous room in South Walton. Eclectic bohemian clutter on every wall, live music seven nights a week, and a short menu of Gulf seafood that has barely changed in decades. It does not take reservations, so send two people to put your name in and have the rest hold a spot on the porch. Lunch runs 11 to 3, dinner 5 to 10.

Chiringo sits just across the way and is the newer energy in the neighborhood, Spanish-influenced beach food with a casual outdoor bar. It handles groups more easily than the Red Bar and the ceviche-and-cocktails combination is exactly right at 2 pm with sandy feet.

AJ's Grayton Beach brings the oyster-bar-and-cold-drinks formula the original Destin location has run since 1984, in a big open-air pavilion just south of 30A on CR-283. It is the easiest big-group seat in the neighborhood.

Drink

The Red Bar's bar side counts double here, but the neighborhood pick is Grayton Beer Company, the local brewery whose taproom is a short drive up in Santa Rosa Beach. Their 30A Beach Blonde is what everyone is drinking on the beach anyway, so go taste it at the source.

Do

Grayton Beach State Park is consistently rated among the most beautiful beaches in the country, with dunes, a rare coastal dune lake, and far fewer people than the public accesses. The group photo happens here.

Western Lake, the dune lake inside the park, is the calmest paddle on 30A. Rent paddleboards or kayaks and you can float between the lake and the Gulf outflow. Book a group paddle for the morning after the big night out. It fixes everyone.

The vintage shops and galleries along Hotz Avenue fill the slow hour before dinner, and the beach access at the end of the street is where Grayton's famous drive-on beach scene happens.

Where to Stay

Grayton itself is mostly older cottages, charming but small. Groups of eight or more usually do better booking a larger house in Blue Mountain Beach or Santa Rosa Beach a few minutes west, then treating Grayton as the go-out neighborhood. If you want walk-home-barefoot proximity, book early. The handful of big Grayton rentals go fast for spring and summer weekends.
