Destin vs 30A: Which Side Do You Actually Want?
This is the first decision every planner has to make and the one that trips groups up the most. Destin has the boats, the nightlife, and the bigger crowds. It is louder, busier, and cheaper to eat and drink in. 30A is a string of walkable beach towns like Seaside, Rosemary Beach, and Alys Beach that trade nightlife for charm, good coffee, and sunset cocktails.
If your group wants Crab Island plus bars open past midnight, stay in Destin. If your group wants a chic house on a cruiser bike path with a pool and sunset dinners at Bud and Alley's, stay on 30A. Many groups do both by staying centrally in Miramar Beach or Blue Mountain Beach.
Where to Stay
For groups of 10+, rent a home through VRBO 8 to 10 months in advance for peak summer. Four bedroom pool homes in Miramar Beach run $800 to $1,500 per night. On 30A, expect $1,200 to $2,500 per night for a walkable Seaside or Rosemary Beach home. Do not wait until spring to book a summer weekend. You will lose every good option.
The Main Event: Crab Island
Crab Island is not an island at all. It is a giant sandbar off Destin where dozens of boats anchor, float vendors sell frozen drinks and tacos, and music plays all afternoon. It is the single most bachelorette thing you can do on the Gulf coast.
Two ways to do it right:
- Private charter: Book a pontoon captain for 5 to 6 hours. Expect $1,200 to $2,500 for a boat that fits 10 to 14 guests, plus fuel and tip. Try Destin Vacation Boat Rentals or a Crab Island party boat company.
- Public shuttle: Cheaper at $35 per person but you are sharing with strangers. Fine for smaller groups, less bachelorette-friendly.
Pro tip: Book Crab Island for the middle day of the trip, not day one. Your group will be jet lagged and sunburned if you jump straight in.
The Best Restaurants and Bars
Boshamps Seafood and Oyster House
Best for: First night dinner in Destin | Price: $$$
Outdoor patio right on the harbor, big tables for groups, and a raw bar that actually delivers. Watch the boats come in at sunset and share a few seafood towers across the table.
Order this: The seafood tower for 4 ($95) and the blackened grouper ($34).
The Great Southern Cafe
Best for: Seaside dinner on 30A | Price: $$$
A Seaside institution with a lively patio right on the town green. Southern plates, shrimp and grits that people drive two hours for, and a porch that is made for a loud group celebrating something.
Order this: Grits a Ya Ya with gulf shrimp ($32) and a Bushwacker.
"Our bach party did dinner here on night two and the manager sent out dessert on the house because we were celebrating. Classy move." Google Review
Bud and Alley's
Best for: Rooftop sunset drinks | Price: $$$
The rooftop bar at Bud and Alley's is the 30A sunset spot. Get there 45 minutes before sunset, grab the table closest to the Gulf, and order the rum runners. This is the photo your bride wants.
Black Bear Bread Co.
Best for: Morning coffee and pastries | Price: $$
The line gets long by 9 AM. Send two people ahead for breakfast sandwiches, pastries, and a dozen coffees. The croissants are the best on 30A and it is not even close.
McGuire's Irish Pub
Best for: Late night in Destin | Price: $$
Ceilings covered in signed dollar bills, 18 ounce beer steins, and live music that goes until close. Not fancy, but a reliable late night energy spot in Destin.
Activities Beyond Crab Island
Golf cart day on 30A
Rent 6 seater electric carts for $250 to $300 per day and hop between Seaside, WaterColor, and Rosemary Beach. Stop for a Bushwacker in every town. This is the 30A bachelorette move.
Private chef dinner at the house
For groups of 10+, a private chef dinner costs $85 to $125 per person and frees your budget for big nights out on other days. Book through Destin Private Chefs or similar.
Paddleboard yoga in Santa Rosa Beach
If your bride is into wellness, morning paddleboard yoga on the bay is the hangover-friendly option that also makes for the weekend's best video.
Dune bonfire on the beach
Permitted beach bonfires on 30A start around $300 to $600 for chairs, wood, and setup. Book 2 weeks out and build a full evening around it.
Planning Tips
- Rent one 12 passenger van for the group, not four Ubers every night. You will save hundreds.
- Summer weekends book out by March. September is the secret shoulder season: warm water, smaller crowds, better prices.
- Most big group restaurants on 30A require reservations 4+ weeks out in summer.
- Bring a portable speaker, a cooler, and 3x the sunscreen you think you need.
- The bride should NOT drive the party bus or golf cart. Ever.
Destin or 30A for Your Bride?
Both work. Destin wins on value and energy. 30A wins on photos and romance. If you cannot decide, split the difference with a house in Miramar Beach and rent a golf cart to explore 30A during the day.
