Portland
Portland's James Beard restaurant scene, craft distilleries, quirky bar culture, and easy access to Columbia River Gorge hikes make it one of the most underrated bach destinations on the West Coast.
Why Portland for a Bach Trip
Portland is the bach trip for groups who want craft cocktails, James Beard restaurants, hipster food cart culture, and a "Keep Portland Weird" vibe that will not feel like every other bach destination. Strip clubs are legal and abundant (Portland has more strip clubs per capita than any US city; some bachelor parties build a weekend around them). The food scene is one of the most underrated in America. The Columbia River Gorge for waterfalls is 30 minutes east. Mount Hood for skiing or hiking is 90 minutes east.
The right group is foodie, indie, or specifically wants Portland weirdness. The wrong group is one expecting tropical beach or polished resort; Portland is gray, eclectic, and proud of it.
Where to Base Your Group
Stay in the Pearl District or Downtown for walkability. Hotels: The Hoxton Portland (boutique), The Heathman Hotel (historic), Sentinel Hotel. For groups, vacation rentals in the Pearl District or Northwest Portland sleep 6 to 10; expect $300 to $700 per night. Avoid the East Side neighborhoods for staying (great food, longer walks back from downtown nightlife).
When to Go (and When to Avoid)
Best months: late June through September. Summer is reliably dry and 75 to 80 degrees. Rest of the year is genuinely rainy; come prepared. Avoid major Blazers playoff weeks and Portland Marathon weekend.
The Day Scene
Multnomah Falls (30 minutes east in the Columbia River Gorge) is the obligatory waterfall photo. The Gorge has six other waterfalls within 20 minutes. International Rose Test Garden (free, in Washington Park) is the morning walk. Forest Park (the largest urban forest in America) for hiking. Powell's City of Books (largest independent bookstore in the world) for the rainy-day cultural stop. Voodoo Doughnut for the iconic donut. Distillery Row in the East Side for whiskey tastings (House Spirits, Westward, New Deal).
The Night Scene
Pearl District: Teardrop Cocktail Lounge, Bible Club. Old Town/Chinatown: The Liquor Store, Botanist House. East Side: Hale Pele (tiki), No Vacancy Lounge. Strip clubs: Mary's Club (the iconic, longest-running), Devils Point (kitschy fun for a stop). Live music: Crystal Ballroom (great venue), Doug Fir Lounge. Most bars to 2 AM.
Food and Drink Worth Planning Around
Portland food is exceptional. Top picks: Ava Gene's (Italian), Le Pigeon (modern French), Higgins. Pok Pok (Thai street food, the iconic). Pizza: Lovely's Fifty Fifty, Apizza Scholls, Ken's Artisan Pizza. Brunch: Tasty n Sons, Pine State Biscuits, Screen Door (the long-line classic). Food carts: Cartopia, Prost Marketplace. Voodoo Doughnut for the photo.
Pro Tips
Bring a real raincoat any time of year. Book restaurants two to three weeks out. Multnomah Falls parking fills by 8 AM in summer; arrive early or take the Columbia Gorge Express bus. Strip clubs in Portland are casual; jeans and a shirt is the dress code, not Vegas-club. The Portland Saturday Market (weekends, only April through December) is the local artisan scene. And no sales tax in Oregon; Portland shopping is cheaper than expected.
