Houston
Houston's Midtown and Montrose neighborhoods serve up one of America's most diverse and underrated bar and restaurant scenes, with a massive nightlife circuit to match.
Why Houston for a Bach Trip
Houston is the underrated big-Texas bach trip. It has more square footage of restaurants than any other city in the South. Midtown and Montrose neighborhoods have walkable bar density. The Galleria and River Oaks district have luxury hotel pool culture. The food scene is one of the best and most diverse in America (Houston is the most diverse major city in the country). Lodging is dramatically cheaper than Austin or Dallas. The trade-off is geography: Houston sprawls across 660 square miles and you Uber for everything.
The right group is a foodie crew or one based in Texas looking for an alternative to Austin. The wrong group is one looking for walkability; Houston requires a car and a plan.
Where to Base Your Group
Two main options: Midtown for walkable bar density, or River Oaks/Galleria for the upscale hotel scene. Hotels: Hotel ZaZa (Memorial City), The Post Oak Hotel (luxury, walkable to Galleria mall), Magnolia Hotel Houston (downtown). For groups, short-term rentals in Montrose or The Heights work well; expect $300 to $800 per night for an eight-person property.
When to Go (and When to Avoid)
Best months: October through April. Houston is hot and humid May through September. Winter is mild and pleasant. Avoid the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (March, lodging triples), Texas-OU weekend (early October), and major Texans home games.
The Day Scene
Hotel pool day at Hotel ZaZa or The Post Oak. The Houston Museum District has the Museum of Fine Arts and the Menil Collection (free) for groups who want a cultural morning. Buffalo Bayou Park for kayaking, biking, and Houston skyline photos. The Galleria for shopping. NASA Space Center Houston (45 minutes south) is a half-day commitment with the actual rocket and astronaut training facilities.
The Night Scene
Midtown is the walkable bar district: Pub Fiction, Front Porch Pub, Howl at the Moon. Washington Avenue corridor has more bars per block than anywhere in the city. Montrose for the hipster speakeasies: Anvil Bar and Refuge (a top-50 US cocktail bar), La Carafe (oldest bar in Houston). Rooftops: Z on 23 (Hotel ZaZa Memorial City), 13 Celsius for wine. Latin nightlife: Concrete Cowboy or Spire. Most clubs to 2 AM.
Food and Drink Worth Planning Around
Houston food is enormous and diverse. Top splurges: Brennan's of Houston (Creole), Pappas Bros Steakhouse, Killen's Steakhouse, Underbelly Hospitality (Hugo's, Xochi). Tex-Mex: Hugo's, Picos, El Tiempo. BBQ: Truth Barbeque, Killen's BBQ. Vietnamese: Crawfish and Noodles, Mai's. Brunch: The Breakfast Klub (the famous wings and waffles, expect a wait), Snooze, BB Lemon. The Galleria area has dozens of high-end Italian and Asian options.
Pro Tips
Houston traffic is brutal; budget extra time during rush hour. The Light Rail covers a small downtown loop but most of the city requires Uber. Book Truth Barbeque or Killen's BBQ for an early lunch (they sell out by 2 PM). The Breakfast Klub line is real; arrive at 7 AM. Houston's Texas Medical Center hospitals and University of Houston football days create traffic chaos; check schedules. And Cocktail Hour at The Pastry War (Mexican spirits bar) is a Houston institution.
