Chicago
Chicago delivers world-class food, legendary nightlife, stunning architecture, and lake views that rival any city in the country.
Why Chicago for a Bach Trip
Chicago is the bach trip for groups who want a real big-city weekend with one of the best food scenes in America, world-class architecture, Wrigleyville bar density, and a real downtown skyline visible from a sailboat on Lake Michigan. The bachelorette circuit here typically combines a Wrigleyville bar crawl, a Michelin-tier dinner, an architecture river cruise, and a rooftop or two. Bachelor groups do well with Wrigleyville sports-bar weekends and the Chicago steakhouse scene.
The right group is one in their late 20s through 40s who appreciates a real city. The wrong group is one looking for chill or beachy; Chicago is loud, dense, and unmistakably urban. Weather can also break a weekend; April and October are mild, but most weekends are either too cold or too hot for outdoor patio time.
Where to Base Your Group
Three good bases. River North is the safest pick for groups: walking distance to top steakhouses, downtown bars, and the Magnificent Mile. The Loop puts you on the river and near the architecture cruise but feels businessy after dark. Wrigleyville is the all-in bachelor option but you commute downtown for nicer dinners. Hotels: The Hoxton Chicago (River North, hip and group-friendly), Soho House Chicago (members), Thompson Chicago (boutique), Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile.
When to Go (and When to Avoid)
Best months: late April through early June, September, October. Summer is excellent but humid. Winter is brutally cold; avoid December through March unless your group is specifically here for a holiday weekend. Avoid St. Patrick's Day (city dyes the river green, hotels triple), Lollapalooza (early August), and Cubs playoff weeks; lodging spikes.
The Day Scene
Architecture river cruise (90 minutes via Wendella or Chicago Architecture Foundation) is the obligatory tourist activity that is genuinely worth doing. Skydeck at Willis Tower or 360 Chicago for the top-down city view. Walking tour of the Loop and Millennium Park for the Bean photo. Boat day on Lake Michigan via Chicago Sailboat Charters or a power boat charter; expect $400 to $1,500 for a half day. Lincoln Park Zoo (free), Garfield Park Conservatory (free), and the Riverwalk are the leisurely afternoons.
The Night Scene
Wrigleyville: Sluggers, Murphy's Bleachers, The Cubby Bear are the bar crawl for sports-bar density. River North: The Underground, Three Dots and a Dash (tiki bar), Brewster Carriage House. Roof bars: Cindy's at Chicago Athletic Association, LH Rooftop at LondonHouse. For dinner-then-dancing, Joy District is the polished club. Speakeasies: The Berkshire Room, The Office (under The Aviary). Most clubs go until 2 AM.
Food and Drink Worth Planning Around
Chicago is one of America's strongest restaurant cities. Top splurges: Alinea (book months out, three Michelin stars), Smyth, Atelier. Steakhouse: RPM Steak, Bavette's, Maple and Ash. Italian: Monteverde, Spiaggia. For deep-dish pizza tradition: Lou Malnati's, Pequod's, or Giordano's; for the local-preferred tavern-style thin crust: Vito and Nick's, Pat's, Marie's. Italian beef: Mr. Beef on Orleans or Al's Beef. Brunch: Bongo Room, Beatrix.
Pro Tips
Public transit (the L) is the fastest way around downtown; rideshare during rush hour is brutal. Book Alinea three months ahead if it is on the list. Wrigleyville on a Cubs game day is electric; check the schedule. The Cloud Gate (Bean) photo at sunrise has no crowds. Skip River North for cocktails on Saturday night; it gets bachelorette-bus-touristy. The North Avenue Beach is genuinely a beach in summer. And the Chicago hot dog rules: mustard, onion, relish, pickle, tomato, sport peppers, celery salt. Never ketchup.
