Why Chicago for a Bach Trip

Chicago is the bach trip for groups who want a real big-city weekend with one of the best food scenes in America, world-class architecture, Wrigleyville bar density, and a real downtown skyline visible from a sailboat on Lake Michigan. The bachelorette circuit here typically combines a Wrigleyville bar crawl, a Michelin-tier dinner, an architecture river cruise, and a rooftop or two. Bachelor groups do well with Wrigleyville sports-bar weekends and the Chicago steakhouse scene.

The right group is one in their late 20s through 40s who appreciates a real city. The wrong group is one looking for chill or beachy; Chicago is loud, dense, and unmistakably urban. Weather can also break a weekend; April and October are mild, but most weekends are either too cold or too hot for outdoor patio time.

Where to Base Your Group

Three good bases. River North is the safest pick for groups: walking distance to top steakhouses, downtown bars, and the Magnificent Mile. Italian: Monteverde, Spiaggia. For deep-dish pizza tradition: Lou Malnati's, Pequod's, or Giordano's; for the local-preferred tavern-style thin crust: Vito and Nick's, Pat's, Marie's. Italian beef: Mr. Beef on Orleans or Al's Beef. Brunch: Bongo Room, Beatrix.

Pro Tips

Public transit (the L) is the fastest way around downtown; rideshare during rush hour is brutal. Book Alinea three months ahead if it is on the list. Wrigleyville on a Cubs game day is electric; check the schedule. The Cloud Gate (Bean) photo at sunrise has no crowds. Skip River North for cocktails on Saturday night; it gets bachelorette-bus-touristy. The North Avenue Beach is genuinely a beach in summer. And the Chicago hot dog rules: mustard, onion, relish, pickle, tomato, sport peppers, celery salt. Never ketchup.
