Before You Go

Napa is spread across a 30-mile corridor and rideshares get unreliable outside downtown. Hire a van or car service for the winery day. This is the one non-negotiable of the trip.

Popular wineries require reservations, so lock tastings in 4 to 6 weeks before a weekend trip. Late spring and early fall have the best weather and slightly thinner crowds.

Day 1: Downtown Napa

Afternoon

Land, drop bags, and walk to Oxbow Public Market for a late lunch. Everyone orders from a different stall and nobody has to compromise.

From there it is a five-minute walk to Napa Valley Distillery for a craft spirits tasting. It sets the tone that this weekend is not just wine.

Evening

Dinner at Cole's Chop House, a classic dry-aged steakhouse in a stone building downtown. Book the private table if your group runs past 8.

After dinner, crawl the First Street bars downtown. Everything is walkable, so no driver needed tonight.

Day 2: The Winery Day

Morning

Driver picks up at 10am. Start at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, the winery that beat the French at the 1976 Judgment of Paris. Even the guys who claim they hate wine will care about that story.

Afternoon

Lunch at Gott's Roadside in St. Helena, burgers and shakes between tastings. Then Hall Wines, which is modern, outdoor-heavy, and relaxed about groups that have already had two tastings.

If the group has energy for a third stop, Sterling Vineyards in Calistoga runs an aerial tram to a hilltop tasting room. It is the best view of the day.

Evening

Back to the house for a pool hour, then a casual dinner downtown. Keep tonight loose, because Day 2 always runs longer than planned.

Day 3: Golf and Recovery

Morning

Split the group. Golfers take a morning round at Silverado Resort, home of two championship courses, or the budget-friendly Napa Golf Course at Kennedy Park. Non-golfers hit the trails at Skyline Wilderness Park for valley views without a serious hike.

Afternoon

Regroup downtown for the brewery lap. Downtown Napa has a walkable cluster of craft breweries, or you can hand the whole afternoon to a guided tour with Napa Native Tours.

Late lunch, one last round, and out.

Budget Breakdown (Per Person, Group of 10)

ItemEstimated Cost
House share, 2 nights$250 to $450
Winery tastings, 2 to 3 stops$120 to $250
Driver for Day 2$100 to $180
Golf round$55 to $250
Dinners and drinks$250 to $400
Everything else$125 to $170
Total$900 to $1,600

Planning Tips

  • Tasting fees are often waived with bottle purchases. Pool the group's money on a few bottles for the house instead of paying 10 separate fees.
  • Wineries stop pouring around 4 or 5pm. Napa nights end early, so plan the big dinner for 7pm, not 9.
  • Three tastings in one day is the ceiling. Past that nobody remembers the wine and the driver earns every dollar.
