Why Duval Street for a Bachelor Party

Duval runs a mile and a quarter from the Gulf to the Atlantic and there is a bar roughly every forty feet. Your group can walk the entire thing, and nobody needs a designated driver, a party bus, or a rideshare app.

That is the whole pitch and it is a strong one. Most bachelor party destinations require you to solve transportation. Key West requires you to solve nothing.

The catch is that Duval is not uniformly good. The upper end near Mallory Square is the loudest and most touristed, the middle is where the live music is, and the best bars in Key West are actually one block off Duval entirely. Plan accordingly.

Working the Street

Sloppy Joe''s

Best for: The obligatory first stop | Price: $8 to $14 drinks

Open since 1933 at the corner of Duval and Greene, wrapped in Hemingway lore, and packed every single night. Live cover bands play from about 1pm until close, which means you can start here at 2pm and it already feels like a bar crawl.

It is touristy and everyone knows it. Go anyway, get the photo, drink one, and move.

Order this: A Sloppy Rita, around $12, or a bucket of domestic bottles for the group.

Irish Kevin''s

Best for: Groups who want to become the entertainment | Price: $7 to $13 drinks

Sing-along cover bands and a house style built entirely around crowd participation. The performers watch the room, and the second somebody in your group does something stupid, it goes into the microphone and the whole bar hears about it.

If your group has a groom in a costume, this is where he gets identified within four minutes. That is either the plan or a reason to skip it.

Order this: Draft beer. This is not a cocktail room.

Willie T''s

Best for: Daytime drinking with a view of the street | Price: $9 to $15 drinks

At 525 Duval with an outdoor courtyard and walls papered in signed dollar bills left by visitors. Live music runs most of the day and the open-air setup makes it the best mid-afternoon stop on the street.

Leave a signed bill. It costs a dollar and it is the one Duval tradition that actually holds up.

Order this: The mojito, around $13, which is what the place is known for.

Rick''s and Durty Harry''s

Best for: Late night, big groups, multiple rooms | Price: $8 to $14 drinks

A complex of connected bars at 202 Duval covering a dance floor, a rooftop, a sports room, and a couple of dive corners. For a group of twelve with different preferences, it is the most efficient single stop in Key West.

It also runs latest. When other places thin out around 1am, this is still going.

Order this: Whatever is on the rail. Nobody is here for the cocktail program.

Hog''s Breath Saloon

Best for: Afternoon live music and actual food | Price: $10 to $18 drinks, $14 to $26 food

Half a block off Duval on Front Street with an open-air stage and a raw bar that is better than it needs to be. This is where you feed the group at 4pm so they survive the night.

Order this: The grilled fish sandwich, around $20, and a dozen oysters.

Captain Tony''s Saloon

Best for: A change of pace | Price: $8 to $14 drinks

At 428 Greene, one block off Duval, in the building that housed the original Sloppy Joe''s. Low ceilings, business cards stapled to every surface, a tree growing through the middle of the room, and considerably more character than anything on the main drag.

Order this: A Pirate''s Punch. Ask for it strong and it will be.

Green Parrot

Best for: Getting away from the bachelor party crowd | Price: $6 to $12 drinks

At Whitehead and Southard, open since 1890, no televisions, free live music nightly, and a motto about being a sunny place for shady people. This is where Key West locals drink, and the bands are meaningfully better than anything on Duval.

Bring the group here around 11pm when everyone is tired of shouting. It is a two block walk and it resets the night.

Order this: Cheap beer and a shot. That is the room.

Aqua

Best for: Groups who want a show with the drinking | Price: $10 to $16 drinks

Drag shows and karaoke at 711 Duval, and one of the most reliably fun rooms in Key West regardless of who is in your group. The crowd is mixed and welcoming and the performers are genuinely good.

Order this: Whatever the bartender points at. Tip well, the show depends on it.

Planning Tips

• Stay within four blocks of Duval. Old Town lodging costs more but you are paying to delete every transportation problem for the entire weekend.
• Start at 2pm, not 9pm. Key West drinking is a daytime sport and the good live music slots are in the afternoon. Groups that start at nine miss half the city.
• Eat at 4pm and again at 10pm. The single biggest failure mode for a Key West bachelor party is a group that drank from 2pm to midnight on one basket of conch fritters.
• Duval bars close at 4am and most of them use it. Pace the group accordingly, especially on night one.
• Work upper Duval to lower Duval, then cut west to Whitehead for Green Parrot. Backtracking on Duval at 1am with twelve people never works.
• Fantasy Fest in late October and spring break in March both triple the crowds and the room rates. If you want a normal weekend, aim for May, September, or early December.
• Set a group chat rule before the first bar: whoever is holding the tab posts the total after each stop. Duval splits go sideways otherwise.
