Charleston vs Key West for a Bachelorette Party

The Short Answer

Pick Charleston if most of your group can drive, the bride cares about food and photos, and you want a weekend that feels elevated without anyone going broke. It is the safer choice for a mixed group.

Pick Key West if the whole point is water, sunsets, and a bar scene that does not quit. It costs more and takes longer to reach, but nothing in Charleston competes with a boat day in the Keys.

Charleston vs Key West on Cost

A Charleston bachelorette generally lands between $500 and $1,200 per person for a weekend once you total the house, food, activities, and going out. A big part of that range is whether people fly or drive.

Charleston is a drive-in market. Groups coming from Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh, Nashville, and the Carolinas save hundreds per person on flights alone. Harbor party boat activities start around $60 per adult.

Key West is not a drive-in market for almost anyone. Add a flight into EYW or a flight to Miami plus a three and a half hour drive down the Overseas Highway, and your travel line item doubles.

Activities cost more too. A two hour sunset sail with live music starts around $80 per person, private charters start near $450 for a small group and run to about $1,500 for eight hours with twelve people, and the branded private bachelorette boat parties start around $1,395 for up to eight. A luxury private bachelorette yacht charter has been quoted at $1,670 per traveler.

Realistic all-in: Charleston at $500 to $1,200 per person, Key West at $900 to $1,800 per person for the same three nights.

Nightlife

Key West wins this outright. Duval Street is a half-mile of bars packed shoulder to shoulder, and the Duval Crawl is a branded 2.5 hour guided crawl hitting five bars with a drink at each plus a t-shirt for $39 to $49 per person.

Two Friends Patio runs karaoke nightly and is a known bachelorette magnet. Green Parrot is the locals bar just off Duval if your group wants a break from the crawl crowd.

Charleston nightlife is better described as bar-hopping than partying. King Street has a strong run of cocktail bars and rooftops, and it is genuinely good, but it closes earlier and skews more dinner-then-drinks than all-night.

If your bride wants a dance floor at 1am, Key West. If she wants a great cocktail and a conversation, Charleston.

Daytime and Activities

Charleston daytime is walkable and photogenic. Rainbow Row, the Battery, a carriage tour, a food tour through the historic district, and a beach afternoon at Folly or Sullivan's Island if you have cars.

The signature Charleston activity is a harbor sunset cruise, and at around $60 per person it is one of the best value anchor activities in any bach city.

Key West daytime is water, full stop. Snorkel trips to the reef, sandbar tours, jet skis, and the sunset sail. Mallory Square at sunset is genuinely worth the tourist label.

Key West also gives you a rest day that Charleston does not. A pool afternoon in the Keys in February is a real option. Charleston in February is not.

Getting There

Charleston International (CHS) is 20 minutes from downtown and served by most major carriers. More importantly, a large share of the Southeast can drive in under seven hours.

Key West International (EYW) is small, fares are high, and schedules are thin. Most groups fly into Miami or Fort Lauderdale and drive down, which is a beautiful three and a half hour trip you will do twice.

Charleston is the clear winner if anyone in your group is coming with a tight budget or a short weekend.

Where to Stay

In Charleston, look for a full house south of Calhoun Street or in Cannonborough Elliotborough. A three to five bedroom historic house lets a group of ten walk to King Street and skip rideshare almost entirely. Expect $250 to $500 per night in shoulder season.

In Key West, the play is Old Town within walking distance of Duval. Conch-style houses with private pools are the standard bachelorette rental and run $600 to $1,200 per night for a group of eight to twelve. Read the cleaning fee and deposit terms carefully. Key West owners are strict about party rentals and deposits are often large.

Best Months

Charleston is at its best in April, May, October, and early November. June through August is humid and July is genuinely rough for a walking-heavy weekend.

Key West peaks December through April, which is also when it is most expensive. September and October are hurricane season and cheap for a reason.

The Verdict

Pick Charleston if your group is spread across the Southeast, half of them are driving, the bride cares about restaurants, and you need the per-person number to stay under $1,000.

Pick Key West if the boat day is non-negotiable, everyone is flying anyway, the group is willing to spend $1,200 and up per person, and the bride wants a beach town that stays loud past midnight.

One tiebreaker: if the wedding is already in the Southeast and half the bridal party has been to Charleston three times, Key West buys you novelty. That is worth something.
