| Winner for low-key | Destin and 30A |
The Short Answer
Charleston is right for a group that wants to get dressed up, walk everywhere, and eat at a different notable restaurant every night. You do not need a car, the whole weekend fits inside about two square miles, and the bar scene is genuinely good.
Destin and 30A are right for a group that wants a house with a pool, a beach walk, and no schedule. The bride who says she does not want to be on a bar crawl is telling you to go to 30A.
Charleston vs Destin on Cost
Charleston generally comes in cheaper. Published estimates put a Charleston bachelorette somewhere between $350 and $500 per person on the low end, and $500 to $1,200 per person once you add nicer dinners and a big rental house.
For Destin and 30A, groups typically report $700 to $1,200 per person for a two or three day weekend, depending on dates and season. The gap is almost entirely lodging.
The reason is structural. Charleston has real hotel inventory downtown, so a group of eight can split rooms. On 30A, the product is the house, and beachfront houses that sleep twelve price by the week in summer.
Destin gets much cheaper in the shoulder season. A late April or early October rental on 30A can drop by a third or more, which flips this comparison entirely.
Nightlife
Charleston wins this and it is not close. King Street gives you a dense strip of cocktail bars, rooftops, and late night spots inside a ten minute walk, plus Upper King for anyone who wants a dance floor.
Destin has The Boardwalk and a handful of beach bars, and 30A proper is quieter still. Seaside and Rosemary Beach are lovely and they are not where you go to close down a bar.
If your group is doing one big night out, Charleston makes that easy. If your group is doing four nights of wine on a deck, 30A does that better.
Daytime and Activities
Charleston daytime is a food tour, a carriage ride, a boat ride out to the harbor, and an afternoon on Folly Beach if you want sand. The beach is a thirty minute drive and it is not the reason you came.
Destin and 30A daytime is the beach, and then more beach. Add pontoon rentals, paddleboards on the coastal dune lakes, and dolphin cruises out of Destin Harbor.
The real difference is what happens when the weather turns. A rainy day in Charleston barely changes the plan. A rainy day on 30A means everyone is in the house.
Getting There
Charleston flies into CHS with nonstops from most of the East Coast and the Midwest, and the airport is fifteen minutes from downtown. Drive markets include Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh, and Savannah.
Destin and 30A fly into VPS, which is close but has fewer nonstops, or ECP in Panama City Beach, which has more Southwest service but adds driving. Drive markets are Birmingham, Atlanta, Nashville, and New Orleans.
Charleston is the easier fly-in for a group scattered across the country. 30A is the easier drive-in for anyone in the Southeast, and you want a car there regardless.
Where to Stay
In Charleston, look downtown between Broad Street and Upper King. Being able to walk home at 1am is worth paying for, and it removes the entire rideshare line problem.
On 30A, pick your town first and the house second. Seaside and Rosemary Beach are polished and walkable, Grayton Beach is looser and cheaper, and Destin proper is the most commercial of the three.
The Verdict
Pick Charleston if your group is flying in from multiple cities, wants to walk everywhere, cares about the restaurants, and is doing at least one real night out. It is also the safer pick if your budget ceiling is firm.
Pick Destin or 30A if the bride wants a pool, a beach, and no itinerary, if most of your group can drive, and if you can go in April, May, September, or October when the houses are affordable. A summer 30A weekend for twelve is the most expensive version of either trip.
