Why Charleston for a Bachelorette

Charleston is the most walkable bach city in the country. Cobblestone streets, pastel single houses, and a peninsula small enough that you can walk from a sailing dock to dinner to a piano bar without ever calling a car.

The food is genuinely on a different level too. The James Beard list reads like a Charleston map.

Where to Stay

If you are 6 or fewer: Book a room block at The Dewberry or Hotel Emeline. Both are walkable to King Street.

If you are 8 or more: Rent a Cannonborough or French Quarter mansion through VRBO. Look for a private courtyard, a rooftop, and at least 4 bathrooms. Expect $1,800 to $4,000 per night in season.

Activities

Daytime

Sailing or boat tour. A 2-hour private sail with Charleston Sailing Adventures runs about $1,200 for 6 and includes a captain and a sunset slot if you book it for 6 p.m. Bring your own bottles.

Candle making. A 90-minute class at Candlefish on Cannon Street is $50 per person and gives you a custom-scented candle to take home. The bride picks the fragrance and everyone makes their own.

Walking the historic district. Free, easy, and the Rainbow Row photo is non-negotiable. Plan 90 minutes from East Bay Street through the Battery and back to King Street.

Beach day. Folly Beach is 25 minutes by Uber and has rentable chairs and umbrellas at the pier. Yoga at sunrise on the beach is bookable through several local studios.

Evening

Build a King Street cocktail crawl. Start at The Cocktail Club at 6 p.m. for the Dock Holiday cocktail at $15. Walk 5 minutes to Prohibition for live music and pre-dinner snacks. Then dance later at Republic Garden and Lounge with bottle service starting at $400.

Where to Eat

Brunch

Poogan Porch. Get the chicken and waffles at $26 and the bloody Mary at $14. Reserve 3 weeks out for Saturday at 10 a.m. or 11 a.m.

5Church. The peanut butter and jelly cinnamon roll at $11 and the praline French toast at $18 are the standouts. Inside an old church, which photographs beautifully.

Lunch

Leon Oyster Shop. A locals favorite for the fried chicken sandwich at $14, patio oysters by the half dozen at $18, and lemon soft serve at $6.

Dinner

Indaco. Italian with the best meatball plate in town at $19 and shareable pastas. Book the chef counter if your group is 4 or fewer.

The Macintosh. The bone marrow bread pudding at $24 is famous for a reason. Save room for dessert.

Butcher and Bee. Mediterranean small plates that turn into a feast for 8. The whipped feta at $14 and the lamb kofta at $26 are the orders.

Malagón. Spanish tapas where the paella for 4 at $84 and the patatas bravas at $9 keep coming.

Sample 3-Day Flow

Day 1 (Friday): Arrive afternoon. Champagne and welcome bags at the rental. Dinner at Indaco. Cocktails on King Street. In bed by midnight.

Day 2 (Saturday): Brunch at Poogan Porch. Candle making at Candlefish. Lunch and oysters at Leon. Sunset sail. Dinner at The Macintosh. Dancing at Prohibition or Republic.

Day 3 (Sunday): Slow brunch at 5Church. Walk through the historic district. Pickup gifts on King Street. Travel home.

Planning Tips

  • March, April, May, September, and October are the sweet spots. August is brutally humid.
  • If your group is 8 plus, get a house. The bachelorette photo content is 5x better and your group dinner is a non-event.
  • Book the sailing trip before you book flights. There are only 2 to 3 sunset slots a night.
  • Charleston is dressy. Pack one nice dinner outfit and one sundress for daytime, plus comfortable walking shoes for the cobblestones.
  • If a heel breaks on the cobblestones, that is the bride fault, not the city.
