Book it: Two to three weeks ahead in peak season (March through July). Full gear rental at $160 is worth it rather than making guys track down their own regulators.

Book it: Their online booking shows live availability. A 27-diver capacity means a group of 12 will not have trouble getting on the same departure.

This is the operator to call if your bachelor group is six people and you want to skip the shared-boat experience entirely. At $695 split six ways you are looking at roughly $116 each before gear, which is not much more than a public trip.

They also sell guide services separately: $85 for one diver, $105 for two, and $125 for a party of three or four. If half your group is freshly certified, paying for a guide is money well spent.

Book it: Private charters go first in spring. Call rather than booking online so you can tell them the skill mix in your group.

Book it: If anyone in your group needs certification, start that conversation two months out. Open water certification is not a weekend-of decision.

Their morning trip pairs a shipwreck with a reef stop, and the afternoon runs two reef dives. They advertise one of the newest and fastest custom-built dive boats in Key West, which means less time motoring and more time in the water.

They also run a dive-in-a-day training option, useful if one guy in the group has been saying he will get certified for three years.

Book it: Ask about the morning wreck departure specifically. It fills faster than the afternoon reef trip.

Captain Hook's Marina and Dive Center

Captain Hook's runs dive charters plus fishing and snorkel trips out of the same operation. If your bachelor party is split between guys who want to dive and guys who want to fish, this is the easiest way to book both without coordinating two companies.

Book it: Tell them upfront you are a bachelor party and ask about splitting a group across two boats on the same morning.

• Book at least three weeks out for March through July. Key West dive boats fill up and a group of eight cannot squeeze onto a half-full departure.
• Everyone needs a certification card. No shop will let an uncertified diver on a Vandenberg trip, no exceptions, no matter how much you offer.
• Add $45 to $65 per person for full gear rental on top of the trip price when you build the group budget.
• Schedule the dive before any flight home, not after. Standard guidance is 18 hours between your last dive and flying, and Key West to a connecting flight is tight.
