Why Golf in Charleston

Charleston is one of the few bachelor party cities where the golf is genuinely as good as the nightlife. You get Pete Dye and Tom Fazio designs sitting on actual ocean, not a housing development with a water feature.

The catch is price spread. A single round in the Charleston area can cost anywhere from $55 to over $500, and most groups blow their entire golf budget on the wrong day.

Here is the structure that works: one bucket-list round, one solid mid-tier round, and one cheap morning nine before somebody has to catch a flight. Book the expensive one first and let everything else fill in around it.

The Courses Worth Your Tee Times

The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Resort

Best for: The one round everyone talks about for years | Price: $300 to $500+ pp | Group size: Book in foursomes, groups of 12 to 16 are routine

Pete Dye built this thing to host the Ryder Cup and it plays like it. Ten holes run directly along the Atlantic and the wind decides your score before you tee off.

Be honest with your group about handicaps. If half your foursome shoots 110, this course will take five and a half hours and everyone will be miserable by the turn.

Book it: Resort guests get priority tee times and better rates, so if anyone in your group is staying on Kiawah, book through them. Reserve 60 to 90 days out for spring and fall weekends.

Osprey Point at Kiawah Island Resort

Best for: The round your whole group will actually enjoy | Price: $100 to $175 pp | Group size: Up to 20 with staggered tee times

A Tom Fazio layout threaded through maritime forest and four lakes. Generous fairways, real greens, and none of the psychological punishment of the Ocean Course.

If your group only plays one Kiawah round and skill levels are mixed, make it this one. Nobody loses six balls.

Book it: Same resort booking system as the Ocean Course. Pair it with a Turtle Point round the following morning if you want a second Fazio in the same price band.

Wild Dunes Resort Links Course

Best for: Ocean holes without the Kiawah drive | Price: $100 to $200 pp | Group size: 36 holes on property, so large groups can split

Tom Fazio's original Charleston-area design, and still the best value oceanfront golf in the Lowcountry. The closing stretch runs right along the beach on Isle of Palms.

Wild Dunes has 36 holes total between the Links and the Harbor Course, which matters when you have 16 guys and want everyone playing at the same time.

Book it: About 30 minutes from downtown Charleston, versus roughly an hour to Kiawah. That drive difference is worth real money in Uber fare for a group.

Patriots Point Golf Links

Best for: The cheap round nobody complains about | Price: $50 to $85 pp | Group size: Very group-friendly, easy weekday availability

Sitting on Charleston Harbor in Mount Pleasant with views of the peninsula, Fort Sumter, and the container ships coming in. It plays 6,900 yards from the tips at par 72.

This is five minutes from downtown at the foot of the Ravenel Bridge. That proximity is the whole pitch: play a morning round, be back at your rental by 1 p.m.

Book it: Rates swing by season and time of day. A twilight tee time here is the single cheapest good golf in Charleston.

RiverTowne Country Club

Best for: A Nicklaus design at a non-Kiawah price | Price: $85 to $150 pp | Group size: Up to 24 with advance notice

The only Arnold Palmer Signature course in the Charleston area, also in Mount Pleasant, running along the Wando River and Horlbeck Creek. Golf Digest has it at 4.5 stars in Places to Play.

Marsh views on most of the back nine and a clubhouse that will handle a group lunch without a fuss.

Book it: Call the golf shop directly at 843-849-2400 for groups over 12. They will usually work with you on a shotgun start midweek.

Charleston National Golf Club

Best for: Best layout-to-price ratio in the area | Price: $70 to $120 pp | Group size: Up to 20

A Rees Jones design in Mount Pleasant that consistently gets ranked above courses charging twice as much. Tight tree-lined holes early, marsh and water on the back.

If your group cares more about a good walk than a famous name, this is where the money goes furthest.

Book it: Weekday morning rates are meaningfully lower than weekend. Shifting your golf day from Saturday to Friday saves a group of 12 real money.

The Links at Stono Ferry

Best for: The budget round on the way out of town | Price: $45 to $75 pp | Group size: Up to 16

Out in Hollywood, about 25 minutes southwest of downtown, sitting on a Revolutionary War battlefield along the Intracoastal Waterway. Three closing holes on the water.

Along with Shadowmoss, this is the best bargain golf in the region and the pace of play is usually excellent.

Book it: Easy same-week booking outside of peak spring. Good option if your group adds a round last minute.

Planning Tips

  • Book the Ocean Course 60 to 90 days ahead for spring and fall. Everything else in Charleston can be booked two to three weeks out.
  • Peak golf season is March through May and September through November. July and August rates drop hard, but so does anyone's willingness to walk 18 holes in Lowcountry humidity.
  • Reserve tee times in foursomes and stagger them 10 minutes apart. Courses handle a 16-person group better as four separate reservations under one name.
  • Most Charleston-area courses require cart, and cart fees are usually bundled into the rate. Confirm this before you quote a per-person number to the group chat.
  • Kiawah is roughly an hour from downtown. If you have two Kiawah rounds planned, seriously consider renting on the island instead of paying for two round-trip group transports.
  • Collect golf money separately from house and food money. Tee times get charged to one card and that person should not be chasing seven Venmo requests on Sunday night.
