Why Charleston for a Bachelor Party

Most groups come to Charleston for oysters and rooftop bars, then get blindsided by how good the barbecue is. This is one of the few American cities where three completely different barbecue traditions are competing inside a ten mile radius.

You get Central Texas brisket, South Carolina whole hog with mustard sauce, and a Puerto Rican influenced pit program that does not really exist anywhere else. Your group does not have to pick a lane.

One thing to know before you build the itinerary: Rodney Scott's BBQ closed its Charleston location on May 3, 2026, and has not announced a reopening. If an older listicle sends your group to North King Street looking for whole hog, redirect them.

The Best Barbecue in Charleston

Lewis Barbecue

Best for: The first meal off the plane | Price: $25 to $40 per person

John Lewis brought real Central Texas barbecue to Charleston in 2016 and the brisket is still the reason people line up. USDA Prime beef, sliced to order at the counter, sold by the pound.

The outdoor beer garden absorbs a group of twelve without anyone needing a reservation. That matters when half your crew lands at different times.

Order this: Fatty brisket by the half pound (roughly $20 to $24), plus one El Sancho green chile sausage link per person.

Palmira Barbecue

Best for: The guy in your group who claims he has eaten everything | Price: $22 to $35 per person

Pitmaster Hector Garate cooks whole hog over wood and seasons it with Puerto Rican flavors, then runs Texas style beef alongside it. Beef cheeks, brisket, and house made sausage all come off the same pit.

It sits out on Ashley River Road in West Ashley, about fifteen minutes from downtown, so budget for two Ubers. Hours are limited and they sell out, so this is a lunch stop, not a dinner plan.

Order this: Beef cheeks and the pernil, split family style across the table.

Swig & Swine

Best for: Feeding a big group without a reservation | Price: $18 to $30 per person

Anthony DiBernardo smokes over wood for up to fourteen hours and runs multiple locations around Charleston, which makes this the most logistically forgiving option on the list. The Savannah Highway spot has the most room.

The sauce bar covers mustard, vinegar, and tomato, so the argument about which South Carolina sauce is correct can happen at your own table.

Order this: The pitmaster platter with pulled pork and ribs, plus burnt ends if they still have them by the time you arrive.

Home Team BBQ

Best for: Barbecue that turns into a bar tab | Price: $20 to $32 per person

Home Team is the one that works as a full night out. Live music, big drinks, and a downtown location on Williman Street that your group can walk to from most of the peninsula.

The frozen Game Changer is famous enough that people order it before they order food. Two of them is a decision, not an accident.

Order this: Smoked wings and a pulled pork sandwich, with one Game Changer per person and a hard stop there.

Poogan's Smokehouse

Best for: Groups staying downtown who do not want to leave | Price: $25 to $38 per person

This is the most polished room on the list, which makes it the easiest sell if your group includes someone who would rather not eat off a tray. It sits on Queen Street in the middle of the tourist core.

Call ahead for anything over eight people. Downtown Charleston restaurants fill up on Friday and Saturday nights well before your flight lands.

Order this: Brisket and the smoked chicken, with fried green tomatoes for the table.

Bessinger's BBQ

Best for: Buffet math on a tight per-person budget | Price: $18 to $26 per person

Bessinger's is old school South Carolina, mustard sauce and all, and it is the cheapest way to put a real meal in front of a large group. The buffet solves the problem of eight guys ordering at different speeds.

It is a drive from downtown, so this one earns its place only if you already have a car or a van for the weekend.

Order this: Whatever is freshest on the line, plus hash and rice, which is the South Carolina side dish most visitors skip and then regret skipping.

Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint

Best for: A crew that is doing Nashville next year and wants a preview | Price: $20 to $32 per person

Martin's runs a West Tennessee whole hog program, which puts a fourth barbecue tradition inside the same city. If your group has already fought about Texas versus Carolina, this settles nothing and that is the fun of it.

Big bar, plenty of screens, and enough seating that a group of ten can usually walk in during an off hour.

Order this: The Redneck Taco, which is pulled pork and slaw on a cornbread hoecake.

Planning Tips

  • Barbecue joints sell out. Lewis, Palmira, and Swig & Swine all run until the meat is gone, so a 1pm plan is safer than a 3pm plan.
  • Call ahead for anything over eight people, even at counter service spots. Most will pre-portion trays if you give them a heads up.
  • Order by the pound instead of by the platter for groups. It is cheaper per person and nobody ends up with three sides they did not want.
  • Two of these are in West Ashley, not downtown. Cluster Palmira and Bessinger's on the same day if you have a vehicle.
  • Barbecue is your best hangover meal and your worst pre-bar-crawl meal. Schedule accordingly.
  • Tip in cash at counter service places. It gets to the pit crew faster.
